Kids Dragon Costumes and Patterns for Halloween
Kids dragon costumes can make for a roaringly fun way for children, both young and old, to dress up for Halloween and many other themed events such as birthday parties too.
If you’re focusing on a Medieval theme and have more than two kids to dress, consider having one of them dressed up as a knight, one made over to look like a dragon and maybe even a pretty little damsel or princess too. There’s a lot of fun that can be had with a dragon dressing up theme.
Children really don’t need to be given reasons to dress up, my daughter certainly needs no excuse, so you should get plenty of adorable play value from an outfit that you either make or buy.

This is a really cute looking unisex infant and toddler dragon costume. It comes in baby sizes from 6 Months up to 2 Years of age. It is machine washable with a zippered jumpsuit for easy taking on and off as well as snap leg closures for easier diaper changes too.
The feet are slip-on and non-skid which are classed as suitable for indoor use and the hood attaches separately in case little one doesn’t want to wear it. It’s great that this costume can be worn by a baby boy or girl with the bright and fun unisex colors of teal and orange.

I love this idea of a cloak which is not so hot and heavy for kids to wear and that can be very important depending on your normal type of weather. It is meant to be easy to get on and off and uses a velcro and clasp closure at the neck.
A cloak style is quite a practical design for children. It also means that they should be able to use this by themselves. Most of these cloaks come with the fun of a hood plus elastic at either side of the cloak’s interior so that they can pretend to flap their wings out too.
Using a cloak is a great idea. It is simple yet lots of fun for a good range of ages. It has a lovely appearance of a green color dragon with colorful ‘scales’ down the hood and back of the cloak.
Dragon Hat for Older Kids to Wear
Older children may prefer an adjustable costume hat like this one which they can use alongside with some wings and plain color clothes to get the whole look of this mythical beast.
Skylanders Giants fans might enjoy a purple color costume (not shown) based on Spyro the dragon. It comes with a mask too that works to completely transform a child into a favorite character.
The outfit is a lightweight one which means that they should not going to get too hot while wearing it and it has a slim fit to it so you may need to go a size up if you want to put layers underneath this. There are sizing charts to check on the product page.

I love the styling of this black dragon costume for children. It comes in a range of sizes for you to choose from with a handy size guide.
It is made from a lovely plush fabric which should be soft for little ones to wear too. Lots of other dragon themed outfits in different designs and colors are available from this seller on Etsy if you don't want black.
2: Dragon Sewing Patterns for Kids Costumes
Sometimes it can be hard to find a ready-made option in the choice that a child really wants – everyone has a favorite color mythical beast such as Smaug from The Hobbit who is red with a gold underbelly or Saphira from Eragon who is blue.
Making your own outfit from a pattern (or getting someone else to sew it for you) ensures that you can select the colors and the fabric to make something really amazing. Here’s some sewing patterns that you can use.

3: Easy To Make No-Sew Dragon Outfit Ideas
Sometimes it just isn’t possible to get the exact outfit or costume that you really want, especially if you’re looking outside of the Halloween season or if you need something rather quick and simple that you can make or put together in a hurry. There are some fantastic no-sew ideas that you can use which will make for a cute looking dragon themed outfit.
I loved the idea of the cloak or cape which was presented earlier. That is pretty easy if you have a cape or cloak that you can use because you can then cut out some large colored ‘scales’ from felt fabric, foam or card and glue those with a hot glue gun down the hood and back of the cloak.
In fact, the triangular scales idea can be used on a large sheet of fabric which is fastened using adhesive velcro round the neck or put the scales down the back of a plain t-shirt or a hooded top instead.

You can often find free printable masks online that you can save to your own computer and then print and cut out. These are best used with a length of elastic round the back to stretch over the child’s head.
Most dragons have wings. There are some of the Oriental variety that don’t have wings but you can bet that kids would enjoy having them. You can make some wing shapes from felt, foam or card and then fix them with hot glue to the back of a plain t-shirt, top or cape.
A scaly tail can be made by cutting out some large triangle shapes, perhaps in alternating colors, and overlapping them to make a long length to affix to the bottom of the top that the child is wearing or at the top of their pants or trousers.
Lastly, think about adding some fake big claws to their footwear. These can be made by cutting 2 or 3 triangles to stick onto the end of some plain colored socks or plimsolls – or even just plain color socks pulled over some shoes. It depends if they need to walk out and about in the footwear or not. Have fun creating a super outfit.
A dragon costume for kids is a really inspired choice for fantasy fans of dragons such as Smaug from The Hobbit, Saphira from Eragon and even Norbert in Harry Potter! And what about the creature Spyro in Skylanders Giants too.
